AI Takeover: 80% of Project Management tasks eliminated by 2030?

Yes, you read that right. By 2030, 80% of today’s project management tasks will be eliminated as Artificial Intelligence takes over.

That’s less than five years away!  It’s a bold claim.

And it must have felt outrageous when these research findings were first released by Gartner in 2019.

So, what have Project Managers learned in the last five years of experimenting with AI tools?

AI is an essential tool in project management

There is a massive log of administrative tasks that come with project management – status meeting agendas, minute taking, project summaries, user stories, follow-up actions. With the support of AI tools, project management teams can easily save time on this necessary, but tedious and low-value-add, work through automation.

Not only would using AI tools free up the project manager’s time for higher-value add work, they can also provide valuable data and early insights into how engaged the business or team is in the work, the impact and cost of delays or rework, and early warnings on whether budgets and deadlines will be met.

Like all technology programmes, garbage in = garbage out.  If your project management processes are weak and your data is in a mess, AI will only exacerbate these issues.

To effectively use AI tools, your project management practices need to be locked down and rock solid.

AI is not going to replace Project Managers

The value of project managers is in their ability to influence stakeholders, motivate teams, resolve conflicts, manage challenges, and build trust.  It is the ability to get sh!t done – on time, on budget, and according to requirements.

Frankly, these are all human attributes. And these abilities cannot be outsourced to an AI tool. Yet.

However, project managers will need to update their skills and approach to focus on strategic thinking, communication, and leadership. The ability to appropriately query and issue commands to get the most out of AI programmes and chatbots will also become an increasingly important skill set in project management.

For project management teams, the smart move is to embrace AI tools which should lead to better programme results, fewer errors, and overall greater success. The fact remains that the human element of project management remains essential for project management success, especially in projects that involve people, uncertainty, and change.

Bottom line - the future of project management will be empowered by AI, not threatened by it.
